View Video Conference on Personalized Medicine, Comparative Effectiveness Research
On October 19 and 20, the NIH, AHRQ, ECRI Institute, Kaiser Permanente Institute for Health Policy, Health Affairs, Milbank Memorial Fund, and the Leonard Davis Institute of the University of Pennsylvania will co-sponsor a major conference on the interface between personalized medicine and comparative effectiveness research. The conference will be available via live video stream and will be archived for viewing online at http://videocast.nih.gov/PastEvents.asp. Panels of physicians and scientists will discuss specific learning objectives about the present and future impact of personalized medicine and comparative effectiveness research on physicians and patients. updated Oct. 14
Bureau of Osteopathic History and Identity announces essay winners
The AOA Bureau of Osteopathic History and Identity has announced the winners of its sixth annual history essay competition. First place was awarded to Hayley W. Ryan, OMS II, a student at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, for her essay titled "Whatever You Are, Be a Good One." The essay examines the bureau's core principle 9: The political efforts of DOs to obtain equal licensure provisions and equal treatment with MDs under the law. Second place honors went to Derek H. Cheng, OMS II, of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine of New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury. Cheng's essay, "Osteopathic Medicine in the U.S. Military: The Battle for Equality and Distinction." focuses on the bureau’s core principle 16: "The factors leading to and the consequences of DOs being admitted to the uniformed services as physicians and surgeons." FDA Issues Drug Warning for Seizure, Bipolar Disorder Medication
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is informing the public that Lamictal (lamotrigine), a medication commonly used for seizures in children two years and older, and bipolar disorder in adults, can cause aseptic meningitis. The FDA is revising the Warnings and Precautions section of the drug label and the patient Medication Guide to include information about this risk. In most cases, patients' symptoms were reported to have resolved after Lamictal was discontinued. Additional information is available on the FDA website. updated Aug. 16
